The 10-minute test that confirms a hidden leak

1. Stop all water use. Every faucet off, no appliances running, ice maker off, irrigation off.
2. Find your water meter. For most Louisville homes it’s in a pit near the sidewalk or curb.
3. Watch the low-flow indicator. The small spinning triangle/star moves with even tiny flow. Spinning with everything off = water escaping somewhere.
4. Narrow it down. Close the house’s main shutoff and look again: still spinning means the leak is in the buried service line between meter and house; stopped means it’s inside.

That one test tells us more than an hour of guessing, mention the result when you call and we’ll arrive with the right equipment first.

Signs of a hidden leak

• A water bill that jumped with no change in habits, leaks show up in numbers before they show up in stains.
• Warm spots on the floor: the classic hot-side slab leak signature.
• Musty smell, mold spots, or peeling paint on one wall or ceiling area.
• The sound of running water when the house is silent.
• Low water pressure at one fixture group: pressure lost to an escape point upstream.
• Cracks in drywall or slab: soil movement from saturation shifts the structure above it.

How professional leak detection works

Acoustic detection

Pressurized water escaping a pipe makes a distinct sound signature. Ground microphones and listening discs let us trace it through concrete, soil, and finished walls to a point, not an area. This is the workhorse for slab and underground leaks.

Thermal imaging

Wet building materials hold temperature differently. An infrared camera shows the cool (or warm, on hot lines) footprint of moisture inside walls, ceilings, and floors, without a single hole. It also maps how far the water has traveled, which matters for drying.

Pressure isolation testing

By valving off sections and watching gauge behavior, we determine which line is losing pressure, hot vs. cold, house vs. service line, fixture branch vs. main run. Isolation plus acoustics is how a leak gets located to inches.

Camera inspection for drain-side leaks

Not every leak is a pressure line. Drain and sewer leaks don’t spin the meter, they show up as odors, slow soggy spots, or pest activity. A sewer camera travels the line and shows the failure directly.
